Designer Crush.....April Tomlin

Designer April Tomlin has been on our radar for quite some time.  And when you see her work, you’ll understand why.  Her style is organic and earthy, but with an edge that makes it spontaneous and unexpected. April is based in Nashville, and has designed many of the A-list clientele in the music industry from Thomas Rhett, to Kelsea Ballerini and Jason Aldean.

April takes her design inspiration from looking at exterior courtyards and gardens.  She loves bringing that peaceful, calm feeling of the outdoors inside.  Let’s take a look at some of the elements of her design that make it so unique.

1. Raw woods and plaster- April loves raw woods and always attempts to incorporate wood with no stain.  Same goes for plaster- she feels it can really elevate a white wall without drawing direct attention to it.

2. Lighting- April chooses lighting that is not run of the mill, and not typically seen in most homes.  She also likes to hang lights in multiple groupings, which gives a dramatic impact to a space.  She's an advocate for dimmers on all lighting, and to replace your Edison bulbs for soft white lights.

3.  Drapery- "Spend your money on drapes"- says April. They are expensive- even if you aren’t doing custom.  Without them your space can fall flat.  April typically uses soft linen drapes, and likes to use a ceiling mounted rod for a lighter look.

4. The unexpected- April's known for that unexpected edge in her Design.  This dining room below is a perfect example.  The wallpaper was spray painted with "This ain't the Ritz Carlton", demonstrating April's quirkiness and sense of humour when designing a space.Photo@apriltomlininteriors

One of April's most recent projects is the stunning Kaiya Beach Resort (kaiyabeachresort.com), on the gulf coast of southern Florida in an area known as 30A.  This beautiful boutique hotel exemplifies the cool, organic, modern beachy vibe that we all love!  This project also motivated April to open a permanent office there and also purchase a vacation home for her own family to enjoy.
